.-Alkali metals prove to be very sensitive to alteration process even if this process is moderate. It is very difficult to use these elements to trace magmatic processes since their concentration may Vary within an homogeneous "unaltered" unit. From all the basaltic units investigated, a classification of "low partition coefficient" elements is presented (Sc, Ti, V, Y, Zr, Nb, La-Tb , Hf, Ta, Th) . The incompatible elements ratios (Y/Tb, Zr/Hf, Nb/Ta) are constant in the samples studied and are nearly equal to the same ratios in chondrites. This is consistent with the existence of an homogeneous primordial mantle at the scale of the North Atlantic, compatible with a chondritic composition of the earth. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

Axial bathymetry, major/trace elements, and isotopes suggest:that the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (PAR) between 56 degrees S and 66 degrees S is devoid of any hotspot influence. PAR (56-66 degrees 5) samples have in-average lower Sr-87/Sr-86 and Nd-143/Nd-144 and higher Pb-206/(204)pb than northern Pacific midocean ridge basalts (MORB), and also than MORE from the other oceans. The high variability of Pb isotopic ratios (compared to Sr and Nd) can be due to either a;general high mu (HIMU) (high U/Pb) affinity of the southern Pacific upper mantle or to a mantle event first recorded in time by Pb isotopes. Compiling the results of this study with those from the PAR between 53 degrees S and 57 degrees S gives a continuous view of mantle characteristics from south... |

Massive zinc, copper and iron sulfide ore deposits have been found at the axis of the East Pacific Rise. Although several investigators had predicted their presence on the deep-ocean floor, there was no supporting observational evidence. The East Pacific Rise deposits represent an appealing modern analogue of Cyprustype ores associated with ophiolitic rocks on land. They contain up to about 29% zinc metal and up to at least nearly 3% metallic copper. Their discovery will provide a new focus for deep-sea exploration, leading to new assessments of the concentration of noble metals in the upper layers of the oceanic crust. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn have been analyzed from Sites 211, 213, 214, 215,and 216 of DSDP Leg 22 of the Glomar Challenger in the northeastern Indian Ocean. According to these trace elements, three different types of source material are broadly defined : the basin floor basalts with a composition similar to tholeiites from mid-oceanic ridges, the basalts and the differentiated rocks from the Ninetyeast Ridge, and the diabase and amphibolite from Site 211. In this paper the notion of stabilization energy in a ligands field is summarized, analytical techniques used are described, and certain conclusions based on the results are presented. The concentrations of high partition coefficient elements Co, Ni, Cr do not Vary or Vary little in the solid phase and the liquid phase as partial melting proceeds. For nickel and cobalt concentrations do not depend on the nature of the solid and the model of partial melting chosen. Quantitatively, the calculated value of the concentrations of these elememts in the liquid agrees with the concentrations found for undifferentiated tholeiitic samples. In so far, large variations of chromium and nickel found in oceanic tholeiites evidence the fractional crystallization process. Cobalt on one hand, nickel and chromium on the other give constraint in regard of the proportions of principal minerals crystallizing. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

From a study of the first transition series elements we will try to define the pattern of fractional crystallization and partial melting. Results are discussed hole by hole in connection with lithological description and major element analysis. and element by element in term of fractional crystallization or partial melting using their partition coefficients. Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidenced only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compm·ed to the East Pacific Ridge. The Lau basin displays an intem1ediate stage with a complex system of accretionary ridges. This difference in the evolution stage is translated in... |

As part of the French-American Ridge Atlantic program the French-American Zero-Angle Photon Spectrometer and Rocks (FAZAR) cruise conducted water column studies between 33 and 40 degrees N along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR)) to detect hydrothermal activity and map its influence, This paper describes the large-scale hydrography within the axial valley, with particular emphasis on the hydrothermally active Lucky Strike segment (37 degrees 17'N). The FAZAR study area is affected be the presence of the Azores Current and Mediterranean Water (MW). Although the MW core has been mapped as far north as 50 degrees N off the ridge; the northern boundary Of the MW within the MAR in the FAZAR study area exists as a strong front south of the Azores platform. This front... |

Three seamounts of the Emperor Seamount chain were sampled during Leg 55: Ojin seamount, Hole 430A, 37° 59.29 N 170° 35.86 E Nintoku seamount, Hole 432A, 41° 20.03 N 170° 22.74 E Suiko seamount, Hole 433A, 44° 46.60 N 170° 01.26 E Hole 433C, 44° 46.63 N 170° 01.23 E Oceanites, ankaramites, transitional tholeiites, alkali basalts, and hawaiites were recovered from these seamounts. The purpose of this study is the fractionation of trace elements according to their physicochemical properties and partition coefficient classification; fractionation of the elements observed in these samples is compared with their fractionation in mid-oceanic ridge tholeiites. Some preliminary conclusions are presented with regard to mantle heterogeneity or homogeneity and magmatic... |
